Appearance:

Varek Thronholm is an average built man, standing at six foot two inches and weighing just over 190 pounds, but his physique betrays the rigorous training that he undertakes on a regular basis. He may not be bulky or agile; however every part of his body is graced with well-toned muscle. His skin tone is a highly tanned olive complexion, and his face has been weathered by both wind and the ocean, giving him the appearance of a man much older than he truly is. He keeps his blonde coloured hair cut short, sporting a well maintained goatee on his chin. His hard slate eyes harbour a look of fierce determination and devotion, however upon closer inspection, there is much more.

Background:

Varek Thronholm is hard-headed, practical and he operates on a loosely observed moral compass. Varek is from hardy stock, however he is known for his quarrelsome and unduly boisterous mannerisms. Varek is bold, war-like and rowdy. He is likeable and enjoys a drink when he has the coin. He has this business acumen and an all-consuming urge to maximise his personal wealth and power with methods which are not – strictly speaking – ethical.

Varek was born in the city of Oppara which resides in Taldor, where danger lurks in every corner of every street, as the strong prey on the weak, and the weak prey on one another. Varek was born of noble parents in the city of Oppara, far, far away from The Shackles. Oppara, like all port cities, is inhabited by both the good and the bad, the lawful and the chaotic. To the young Varek, the darker side of existence always held the most attraction.

He was fascinated by the unique clad worshippers of strange deities such as Besmara, the goddess of sea monsters, pirates and the untameable ocean, whose devotees always went about clad n their tri-corner leather hats, with balaclava concealing their lower faces, with white linen shirts tucked loosely into their beige drawstring trousers, their wide leather belt boasting either their cutlass or rapier. When Varek reached the age of sixteen, he snuck into Besmara’s temple, a warehouse on the wharf used to smuggle slaves and cargo to avoid harbour taxes. It was during one of the masses of the temple, where they made live sacrifices to Besmara, that Varek learnt why the worshippers always wore leather bracers around their forearm: as part of their initiation, burning brands were applied around the forearm, causing great welts and scars. If the scars formed themselves into the skull and crossbones symbol of Besmara, the acolyte was accepted; if not, he was shackled with iron manacles and disposed of into the harbour.

Varek was caught that night, lurking in the shadows at the rear of the temple. He was given a simple choice, either take the test of the flame, or die then and there. The burns were made, and they formed themselves into Besmara’s runes before the disappointed eyes of the pirate priests. Varek was suddenly an initiate of Besmara. Fearing what his parents would do when they saw the brandings, Varek fled Oppara on board a merchant ship. On the journey, however, the ship was raided by pirates operating out of Rahadoum, who enslaved the fitter members of the ship’s company and threw the rest to the sharks. The pirate captain was intrigued by the boy with the markings of Besmara, and he allowed him to become his cabin boy. Two winter’s later he fled the ship after a mutiny disposed of the former captain, turning up in port, working his passage as a smuggler and ship hand until he had enough coin or brass to acquire his own galley, legally or otherwise. Varek is obsessed with the loss of his former captain, whom he looked up to as mentor and trusted ally. All he knows is that one day he will return debts owed twice fold and that revenge is a meal best served cold.
